corticospinal facilitation of erector spinae and rectus abdominis muscles during graded voluntary contractions is task speci.c: a pilot study on healthy individuals

چکیده
introduction: in this study we compared transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms) elicited motor evoked potentials (meps) in a postural (bilateral low back extension: blbe) and a respiratory (forced expiration during breath holding: febh) task.methods: using tms of the left motor cortex, simultaneous patterns of corticospinal facilitation of the contralateral erector spinae (es) and rectus abdominis (ra) muscles during graded voluntary activation were compared in seven healthy subjects. result: the facilitation pattern demonstrated task dependency by showing that mep amplitudes in the es muscle tended to be smaller at any given contraction level in the febh task than in the blbe task. discussion: the results suggested a linear-type relationship between the size of meps with increasing background contraction of es and ra in the blbe task. however, both muscles showed a plateau effect with higher background contractions (>50% of maximum) during the febh task. the varied response of es and ra across these two tasks reinforces the importance of task speci.c training in clinical settings.

متن کاملArchitecture of the rectus abdominis, quadratus lumborum, and erector spinae.
Quantitative descriptions of muscle architecture are needed to characterize the force-generating capabilities of muscles. This study reports the architecture of three major trunk muscles: the rectus abdominis, quadratus lumborum, and three columns of the erector spinae (spinalis thoracis, longissimus thoracis and iliocostalis lumborum). Musculotendon lengths, muscle lengths, fascicle lengths, s...
متن کاملPrediction of maximal surface electromyographically based voluntary contractions of erector spinae muscles from sonographic measurements during isometric contractions.
OBJECTIVES Currently, there are no studies combining electromyography (EMG) and sonography to estimate the absolute and relative strength values of erector spinae (ES) muscles in healthy individuals. The purpose of this study was to establish whether the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the ES during isometric contractions could be predicted from the changes in surface EMG as well as in f...
متن کاملEffects of bridge exercise on trunk core muscle activity with respect to sling height and hip joint abduction and adduction
[Purpose] This study evaluated the effects of bridge exercise on trunk core muscle activity with respect to sling height and hip joint abduction and adduction. [Subjects] Fifteen healthy adult males participated. [Methods] In the bridge exercise, the height of the sling was set low or high during hip joint abduction and adduction. Electromyography was used to compare the differences between the...
متن کاملErgonomic Evaluation of Relationship between Electromyographic Activity in Selected Trunk Muscles and Back Discomfort While Working with a Laptop in a Sitting Position
Introduction: Low back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders leading to disability around the world. Several studies have suggested that prolonged computer/ laptop work contributes to the development of low back pain and discomfort. The results of the studies conducted on the association of back discomfort and muscle activity are contradictory. Thus, the present study aims to...
